Part-timers cost a lot less. No worry about health care, retirement, 401K, pension, etc. Merck can price shop after the contract is over for yet a cheaper vendor.

Sounds like the UAW people complaining about foreign labor making "cheap" products while pricing themselves out of a job. We as full-time reps are not that much better in the ROI measurement department either.
The part timers on contract do not get paid benefits, car allowance, just mileage. They actually are getting screwed too.
