My version of 15 by 15

Well the above was a long way of saying the 15 guy lowered his golf scores. That's the only tangible thing he appears to have accomplished, but it's a sure bet he's lying about what he shoots. He's lied about everything else, except not working, I wager he's now a pro at that, but that's not much. It really ain't that hard to do nothing and fake doing something now is it?

You sir are too kind. “Profound”, “fancy philosophical prose” and “Pulitzer-winning Shakespearean prose” are terms that come to mind? I am flattered by your portrayal of my post. I never considered my language skills in this manner but I thank you for the complement.

The rest of your nonsensical rant simply substantiates my original observation and makes me muse about how immaterial your post actually is. So, I will do my best to help connect you to the original point.

The 15 x 15 guy is disgruntled and expresses his distaste for all things Merck. So be it, not everybody in this world is happy with their circumstances or choices. Although he referred to himself as “an honest rep”, he has advocated for the “15x15 lifestyle” that promotes doing as little as achievable while gladly receiving his compensation for the deception. He has chronicled his exploits for the last two years, on a forum he started, for the purpose of instigating reactions from others. What other reason could there be? From this effort, two factions have emerged, those that disagree and question his ethics and those that admire his resolute and kowtow to each of his accomplishments.

It is undeniable; this individual demonstrates a number of leadership qualities. His posts suggest that he is creative, confidence and committed. He appears decisive and capable of inspiring others as he beckons “Who’s with me?” But many of those other leadership traits needed to be successful such as vision, honesty and values are completely absent. Any observer, not caught up in the emotion of the moment, realizes that all he embraces is self-serving and in the end counterintuitive to success. He is in effect, selling “Kool-Aid”.

If "Kool-Aid" rings familiar, its because this metaphor is often used to describe the Merck managements efforts to establish unquestioned belief in their decisions. From my perspective, the 15 x 15 guy shares many of the attributes as those leaders within the Merck organization. Full of their own self-worth, no allegiance to any of those around them, and grabbing at all they can while they can. So who can blame him, as this thinking is all part of the indoctrination at Merck because it accepted and rewarded. Those that have been most successful, rose through the ranks of this company, because they excel at this behavior. Others have simply arrived at their station through the process of attrition. Just as it exists in the Merck culture, it exists here in this forum. The 15x15 guy has his detractors that cannot fathom such behavior and in my opinion, justifiably so. On the other side are his sycophants, of whom you are clearly one, and is why you take such umbrage in my words. Even though you were not explicitly a target of my post you felt compelled to respond the way you did. While I have little respect for company management and their cronies, I don’t see much distinction between them and the 15x15 guy and his minions. You, on the other hand, think you share nothing in common with those within the organization that you most clearly despise. Here in lies the incongruity to which I referred.

If Merck leadership continues to accept compensation for their deception, (which is lightyears greater than the 15 X 15 guy's) why shouldn't he do the same, and do it on the golf course if that is his preferred habitat...

why shouldn't people screw Merck back...trust me, they don't fret to much about screwing people over....or killing them for that matter...just talk to some of the folks who sold VIOXX....Merck knew exactly that they were doing...the money was more important than people's lives...

Merck leadership and 15x15 guy are one I the same. The deceit may be different in scale but the behavior is wrong by both parties. One cannot justify referring to leadership as evil incarnate and guy a righteous victim of circumstances. I respect neither and both are responsible for the demise of this company.

Bingo. 14 pages of futility to realize that the cheater and the cheated are really the same.
Like two small town judges who both get speeding tickets and try each others cases, one sits the bench and the other in the docket. The first judge presents his case and the verdict is :"sentence suspended- no fine" then they switch places and after the case is read the verdict is:" guilty, $500, 10 days in jail." "But I let you off" cried the first judge." "I know" said the judge who was in the docket first, " but we really need to do something about all this speeding so I'm cracking down!"
It was really all about a guy that only wanted to work less.
I still say he lied about his golf score. How weak is that?

Don't mention it, you are a good writer. Scale matters. That is why stealing a candy bar from a grocery store is a misdemeanor. While stealing a car or a diamond heist is a felony. There is a reason why the law makes this distinction, and why the penalties are so vastly different. So as much as you want to equate 15 guy's misdemeanors with the wholesale pillaging /butchery being committed by the Executive Committee, they are many orders of magnitude apart.

It seems pretty clear, from the last 10 years or so, that the senior leadership of the company has been accountable to no one. Even the shareholders have recently been disappointed by the arrogance and lack of transparency. With such blatant and repetitive disregard for employees and shareholders alike, one would expect that at some point the leadership would be taken to task for their failed corporate governance. But it appears that the BOD is in collusion with the EC, and the dismantling of a once respected pharma/science powerhouse continues unchallenged.

It stands to reason, therefore, that this creates the type of backlash being perpetrated by the OP. You call it dishonest. Perhaps. But it's more about empowerment, and not putting every last ounce of your time and loyalty into an entity that will squash you like an ant in a second. It's about living a balanced life, and not surrendering your energy and every waking moment to a corrupt, uncaring, and unaccountable gang of executives. You can call it misguided, dishonest, or whatever else. But others ( myself included) see it as a small measure of karma. A small measure of taking back control. Life is too short to be led to one's slaughter in a compliant, non-questioning manner. Listening to your executioner's lullabyes and reassurances, even as they prepare to put the hangman's noose around your neck and the necks of your co-workers. So while some view this thread as a tale of theft, I view it as a sincere attempt at self-empowerment and work-life balance in the face of ruthless corporate butchery and lies.

OK so a 15 guy is a slacker with a point of view, like some kinda "occupier". AND worked on his golf game. What did it accomplish? Nothing. Did Merck even notice? No. Did others follow? Probably not. Will he get a layoff notice this month like may others? Most likely. Will he be thereafter soon forgotten? Yes.

It accomplished quite a bit actually. He managed to keep his life balanced, and did not buy into the lies and deceit that Merck leadership is so adept at. As for whether Merck noticed, you are not in a position to say. As for whether he specifically will get a layoff notice, you are also not in a position to say. You are not their spokesman, much as you like to pretend that you are.

He has so much "balance" that he doesn't even read this thread, rarely posts. You are also not in a position to say what difference the entire exercise made "sententia iudicum" and that point is moot. I certainly don't think that people are walking around with a hang mans noose around their necks. You get paid well, don't work all that hard relative to the market of general employment and can leave at any time. No ones shooting at you.
So leadership exercises " lies and deceit" look no further than our Gov., get over it,stand in line. If you want to change the world join the Peace Corps. I still say he lies about his golf game, so there's a lie for you.

Also explains why so many Wall Street Bankers are serving hard time.

Perhaps 50% of the sales force are slackers. Who knows? You don't for sure. Maybe they are kinda "occupying" a job but not really get the work done. Sure, nobody has noticed. It's not like our crack sales team hasn't brought in enough revenue to support research. It's not like Merck isn't laying off 8500 people including much of its R&D. It's not like this company is in the crapper struggling to survive. That's the great thing about being a slacker. When its just the one nobody really notices. If everybody does it then the company doesn't make it. Say whatever you want about the EC but I betcha they show up for work everyday.

You're giving the "crack" sales force too much credit. They look great with multiple blockbusters or first in class products in the bag. Now not so much. Give 'em a little competition and Merck folds like the cheap chairs you sit on in meetings. Ask Pfizer ask Novartis. Hell ask anybody. Merck reps can work or not work and the marketplace doesn't much notice the difference either way. Might as well lay a bunch of 'em off and save some money.
Golf well,15 guy.

Some beautiful lengthy prose on this page. Maybe some of those guys should have put the same kind of efforts into their careers, then they wouldn't need to come on here to complain.

I remember attending a meeting in Chicago with the fearless Regional Mgr. Michael Tu, and he introduced his manager, sorry, can't remember the douche's name, and said, "here is a guy who really drinks the Kool-Aid". Yes, the competent management at Merck, not realizing the slogan comes from a mass suicide in Jonestown back in the day. The sad thing is, dumbasses like Tu, still hold top positions in the Pharma Industry. So I salute Mr. 15 x 15. Is he still hanging in there, as the OP was back in 2011???

Go on jealous tirades much? I am not looking to change the world, never said I did. I think you were simply itching to use that tired Peace Corps cliche you've been keeping pent up in your diaper. Focus. This thread is about being in control of your own life. Focusing on family, good friends, good food, living well. Also, being smart about finances, and having alternate sources of income. And last, but not least: giving Merck the big FU it so richly deserves. Some folks choose not to be Merck's bitches, for reasons that have been laid out very clearly. Don't take it so personally. After all, it's just business. LOL.

Exactly. Thank you.

Focus? I don't need some anonymous moron on CP to tell me what, in life to focus on. But I still don't get the whole angry "FU Merck" tirades. You need focus? Focus on getting over your bitterness and moving on. Maybe you can't or don't have anywhere else to go. How sad.
