Long Term Play with DS (and device in general)

Former DS Trauma Rep

Guest
seems like in the almost 3 years I’ve been gone (did trauma for 12 years) that price erosion is significantly worse for reps....hospitals telling companies what they will pay instead of vice versa. Contracts being negotiated between big entities and corporate bean counters. Sign of the times; quickly becoming a commodities business. And if you’re a rep with an HCA hospital or working under a large GPO contract, the crappy pricing you have today for your implants is as good as it will ever get for you. Not going all “the sky is falling” on anyone just that folks have to realize (I hope) that pricing never goes up, only down. Sucks b/c I know trauma is a challenge with the hours, unpredictable schedule, etc but you can be the greatest rep in the world these days and it doesn’t matter to the folks that negotiate these contracts.

So it looks like its time to bring back RICK GENETT, TONY RANDAZZO, PHIL COBURN from the original Synthes to use there keen negotiating skills to charge what they want and to put SIMS storage units back in business to stuff inventory into accounts. Let's not forget the old trick of stuffing implants in the ceiling panels of central supply. Always a great way to get a 50k bump on a PO when you need it..the good ole days.

Sad but true. In 3-5 years being a trauma rep will no longer be worth it based on compensation and the schedule required to do the job.
Meanwhile trauma reps have taken on CMF (or taken from CMF reps) and most lose the business as OMF docs get sick of seeing their reps tied up in trauma cases all the time. Great opportunities for Stryker, KLS and Biomet
