China to Cut Value Added Tax on Rare Disease Drugs to 3%

February 13, 2019

Beginning on March 1, China will reduce the VAT on a group of 21 rare disease drugs from 16% to 3%. The government's announcement did not specify which drugs would be in the group. The move may signal a growing interest in drugs for rare diseases in China.

In May of 2018, China's National Medical Products Administration and the National Health Commission published a list of 121 rare diseases. This may make it easier to review and approve drugs for the diseases.
