Why is Abbott outsourcing a lot of the operations outside the US?

Because the future of Abbott is outside of US. Miles has said that himself.

No need to pay as much benefits (healthcare (esp when reform kicks in), pensions, insurance, 401K...), therefore cheaper labor force. Never worry about unions, taxes much less...

    Because we can.

Lower wages and MUCH higher quality. They actually work 40+ hour weeks and aren't sick all the time, have Dr.'s appointments, stay home with a sick kid, have auto problems, etc.

    You do the math.

Have you actually had to work with them? They don't know what they are doing half the time, their turn over rate is high. You cant understand them, Yes they work for lower pay but Abbott is getting rid of experience and loyalty for... what? No, they do not work longer hours, they work late hours so they are on the same time frame and the company they are infiltrating.

You are correct cheaper labor and avoiding the dreaded FDA.

The number one reason and the one that 'broke the camel's back' is Obamacare.

Why all the outsourcing? Because 70% of our sales are OUTSIDE THE US! It's where the GROWTH markets are. How can you NOT understand that? The potential is HUGE! The US market for most of our products in sluggish, as best... have you not been paying attention? Jeez....

It's a very simple answer..... The cost is cheaper, the worker is more intelligent and gets the job done faster and more accurate, and biggest of all, they're sick days and personal time is almost non-existent. Americans are a bunch of high paid slackers!

    The cost is cheaper
The initial cost is cheaper. When you add in the required re-work and the increased exposure to regulatory risk, the costs escalate.

    the worker is more intelligent
Better educated in some instances maybe, but this rarely translates to being able to do a technical job better.

and gets the job done faster and more accurate,
Faster, yes. More accurate? Nope. Seldom has anything crossed my desk that didn't require rework for some of the simplest technical reasons.

and biggest of all, they're sick days and personal time is almost non-existent.
Well, most H1Bs don't know to wash their hands after using the rest room either so maybe it's a cultural thing.

Americans are a bunch of high paid slackers!
There's a reason Abbott can get 2-1/2 H1Bs for the price of one US employee and it has nothing to do US workers 'slacking'.

Race to the bottom, we are almost there.

Agreed. But being able to get 2 or more H1Bs for the price of one experienced real employee is too great of a proposition for management to ignore.

Here's a prediction based on my experience with the H1Bs.....
    1. A number of agency audits and corrective actions will occur over a relatively short time frame.
    2. The company will point to the major players that were contracted to provide 'quality' work and services.
    3. The agency will correctly conclude that the company is ultimately responsible for any all actions of these service companies.
    4. The agency will force another consent decree.
    5. Customer confidence will follow the downward curve that resulted from the 1999 decree.
    6. The stock price will follow the downward curve that resulted from the 1999 decree.

    Then, one of two things.....
    7. Poison pill defense is implemented and the company along with stockholders languish for a decade or more.
    -----------------------------or-------------------------------
the company is a take-over target and gets absorbed by another big player.

Again, only a prediction based on observation and opinion.

And after that, Abbvie Gets Acquired. As soon as Humira goes generic,
Abbvie is getting dumped,Possibly to PFE.
In 2 years Abbvie and 70% of personal will be gone

So Abbott can afford to keep paying Nancy Burse's fat bonus checks.
