    Hello Everyone:

I was hoping for some advice on relocating...I'm currently not in Boston, but I'd like to move there in the future. The problem I'm facing is getting interviews because I'm not currently in the area. Does anyone have any advice to get around this issue?

    Thanks for all honest responses.

Ok, here is an honest response: Do you read about what is happening up here as far as the drug rep profession is concerned? Come on, dude. Get a clue..............

DO NOT WORK IN PHARMA IN BOSTON. WE ARE HATED. HQ PEOPLE HAVE NO FREAKIN CLUE. EXPECT THE SAME PERFORMANCE AS THE SOUTHEAST, NJ, NY, ETC... TOTALLY DIFFERENT MARKET. PROBLEM IS, NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR ABOUT IT....."JUST GET IT DONE" MENTALITY. ONLY WAY IT WORKS IS IF YOU BUY ONTO MAJOR FORMULARIES REQUIRING A STEP EDIT....IE: PROTONIX.

If you're pressed to get a job in Boston, claim you live in an address in Allston (crappy/college neighborhood near the center of town) and post your resume from there. Cluster your interviews for a period that you'll be here. Craigslist allston apts and come up with some address.

    Are you serious?

First of all, I doubt anyone is hiring. Most companies are debating having reps in MA at all. Second, you only THINK you know how bad it is here to be a rep. It's worse than you can possibly imagine, and as you start working here and the reality creeps in, you will become a depressed, demoralized drone. Honestly, I relocated here from the Midwest and if I sold anywhere near as hard there as I do here, I would have been blowing the numbers away. But here, no matter how hard you try, the formulary dictates everything, and you wind up with 5-8% market share when the rest of the nation might be in the 30% range.

No lie, the generic utilization here is in the 70+ range, versus the opposite in the rest of the country.

The doctors can get paid (by the insurance companies) up to $80k a year bonus for writing generics. Sometimes more. Just try to justify the use of your branded drug to a doctor who's got his/her eye on that cute cottage at the Cape. Or has two kids at Brown.

They blame the drug companies for prior authorizations, high prices, etc., but it's really just the way they've justified succumbing to the pressures (and payoffs) of the insurance companies.

The insurance companies OWN this state, and the doctors are their willing servants. But it's your fault.

Go into a different business. Try software sales, Boston is a big market for that.

Run the other way from Boston!!! I am a specialty rep as well and the access is terrible this state is the worst!!!!

You will work harder than you have worked in your life and not make bonus!!! Doctors have to write 80% generics or they don't get their bonus in most places I have encountered.

If you are lucky u just drop samples off and get signatures thats it no face time ever!!!! You will be done by 12noon everyday!!!

That is only part of the problem the state is passing draconian laws against reps ie: no dinner programs even if an md in mass wants to go to one in rhode island the law forbids it because they are licensed in mass!!!

This is only part of the problem, the cost of living is outrageous!!! Rent, housing everything costs more here!!! It is one of the most expensive regions to live in in the country.

Ok, I really don't want to sound negative, but to come to New England AT ALL to enter the industry is NOT a good idea. People from outside the area do not understand the environment of New England and always assume it is the reps that are horrible, but the truth is, in many states there are laws preventing us from working effectively as well as a long standing hatred towards the industry, specifically in Boston. If you still want to make that move, then I suggest Palmer and Young or some recruiting firm specializing in Pharma. But, let me be clear, to move from a part of the country with good access and good relationships to Boston where every rep is hated and literally denied entrance to many offices and clinics is not neccessarily the best idea.

this isnt obama-care here in Mass. Its the ultra-left, democratically dominated Statehouse! Whats happening in Mass is just a precursor to what will be happening nationwide!

Id bet the no rx data law that is on the books in NH hits the rest of New England in the near future. Not like we need data to see doctors write 0 branded drugs in MA

  12. I know this is from a while ago. But I do AV for a lot of pharma meetings in Boston and I pay attention. I know Boston has a bad rep lately for large pharma but one company whose sales reps are all very well paid and is expanding is Organogenesis.

I would check out all avenues if you want to live there and find a successful company with a specialty, there are lots in the area. I hope this is a little helpful in steering you in the right direction.
