Drug testing laws protecting the privacy of employees varies from state to state. Even though Cardinal Health say that they drug test in the following circumstances: pre-hire, reasonable suspicion, random (quarterly), and post-accident; not all states allow the last two. For example, in California you can't randomly drug test employees unless they are in safety-sensitive jobs. So if you're in sales at Cardinal Health, you're never going to get randomly selected at the end of a quarter; never. And in California, if you are not in a safety-sensitive job, you cannot be drug tested post-accident unless there is a death, injury, or significant property damage. There you go folks, smoke up.
Read what I said, all states vary. California falls under one of those states that does not allow it, unless you're in a safety-sensitive job.
And just because we work with the federal government, and thus abide by the Drug-free workplace act of 1988, that doesn't mean anything in regards to drug testing, it just means this company has to offer drug rehab and information programs to promote a drug-free workplace.

Correction. In California if you are not in a safety-sensitive position, you will not be drug tested post-accident unless there is strong reasonable suspicion or the accident was very serious. I've read other places that post-accident testing in California is murky, and if you are not in a safety-sensitive job, a company will need very strong evidence you were under the influence to avoid a lawsuit. As a result, they just won't go there if there isn't evidence you were high/drunk.
They use hair when originally hired and then urine for all random and post-accident testing once hired. Check with your state laws as to whether they allow random testing and post-accident testing, California doesn't allow it, so Cardinal doesn't conduct those tests for sales reps.

I do live in California. I've worked for Cardinal about 4 years. Personal experience? Yes, I googled "California labor laws drug testing" and then I asked HR about it because they are not the Gestapo, they are an employer you collect a paycheck from and you are an individual that offers your job expertise with a right to know whatever you want.
Does Cardinal test employees for tobacco? I know some companies test for that and don't hire people who that. Also, after the pre-employment test, which I've gathered is hair, do they do random testing all that much? For their corporate division in a non safety-sensitive job?
Ugh just had an interview in a legal state. I can pee clean and only smoke 2 or 3 times in the past 90 days. I promise I'm a good person and have never had an accident on job. Sick to my stomach about it.
