    Hi Merck Folks,

I am in the process of getting hired for a position at Merck. They offered me serious $$, and coming from Academia I am very happy to have the opportunity to do science AND get paid well for it.

Academia is a very relaxed environment, and I have never faced a drug screen or background check. My question for you is: what sort of things are they looking for in my background check? Do they google me and look for whatever random crap is out there? There are some google results attached to my name that I'd rather NOT have HR find out about.

Any insights into the drug screen / background check phase? Out of curiosity, how many people fail at this point in the hiring process? And what do people generally fail for?

    Thanks dudes!

The Drug Screen is a urine test. Make sure you haven't done anything for a month if your weed smoker. If you did other stuff I cant help you. Background is a criminal, DMV, and credit. Bad credit is not a dis-qualifier completely unless you have unpaid disputes. No DUI or more than 2 tickets in last 5 years. DUI is deal breaker.

What if I've sued a previous employer that also was a drug company?

Thanks for the quick reply #3! I am worried about non-DMV and non-credit issues. I was involved in political groups with extreme left-wing views when I was younger. When I google my name (which is unique) there are a lot of results attached to my political activities. I don't have a criminal record, but I am positive that Merck would not agree with my politics!

What's wrong #2? Are you upset that I can use "your" and "you're" correctly?

Hi Everyone, I am the OP.

So I got the background check info from Hire Right... it was seriously no big deal, just verifying my legal name, SSN, criminal history, and allowing them to check my credit history.

#5... Very funny, however I am not going to be a pharm rep. I am a scientist. I always thought the awesome salaries of a pharm rep outweighed any ugliness of the job. Of course, I have never made more than $30,000 so, I am easily impressed by a moderate salary.

    I am the OP.

I wanted to let everyone know that the background check was literally ONLY for driving records, criminal, and credit history. They definitely did not google me. The post worrying about law suits: there is nothing to worry about. They don't care if you sued some drug company.

The drug screen is a urine screen. Nothing special.

What about pre-employment? Does Hire Right check dates and cross Refrence with your Resume?? Or does HireRight send the infor to your prospective company and they cross reference with HireRight?? Any help would be greatly appreciated...

    Thank you.

    Hi all ,

Has anyone had a drug test recently for Merck? I heard they might be changing from urine to hair follicle.

    Thanks for any help.

Depending on what department you are applying for they may want a sperm sample.

Do you know which departments would require a hair follicle test? And what would they use a sperm sample for? Thanks again for your help.

QA requires the sperm sample. Scientific Affairs requires a panty sniffing.

I have a friend in pharma (scientist) non-Merck. They have been doing regular hair follicle testing for years. Not so much as a pre-employment screen but to ensure they are not being exposed to dangerous chem levels in the labs. These tests are pretty expensive so I can't imagine Merck throwing that around for a pre-hire.

all you need is a nice smile, then the sperm sample is taken for analysis. :)

Left wing political activist who is inquiring about the drug screen???...You sound worried about something...stay clean you idiot if you want to work in this industry. If you like Socialism, you'll like the collaboration and teamwork at Merck! But then again, maybe you can drop some LSD and come up with a new compound that is a first in class profit maker!! Then move into a VP position and give sperm samples.
