You are absolutely correct . The vaccine customer reps could have easily called on retail Pharmacies, and some did, in their geography and maybe they could have created a pharmacy account manager to call on region pharmacy directors within the retail pharmacy chains of a state. Merck didn't have to create a separate new salesforce to cover the pharmacy market entirely. I believe Merck did that to shuffle around reps to initiate another downsizing. I wouldn't be so quick to go after any new vaccine rep positions in the future. The VKCL position was meant to be a life raft for favored CTL's and former S3 pets who are safer than S1's and S2's. The only thing constant in the Vaccine Division is layoffs/realignments every 2 to 3 years unless there are new products. Gardasil 9 wasn't new, it was just an enhancement. Good luck surviving in the Vaccine Maze.

Salas of vaccines were higher when the Pharmacy Account Execs called on pharmacy HQ before the pharmacy reps positions were created. They would have saved a lot of money if they never created this sales force. Decisions are made at the pharmacy corporate level anyway and the pharmacy reps had nothing to do in the pharmacy. Merck knows this was a mistake and will be shuffling these reps to other divisions soon. What a waste of time and money with the pharmacy sales force.

The smart CTL's and reps have already left to other account reps positions and reps positions knowing that the pharmacy division will be disbanded next year.

So only the not so smart ones are left. That was the goal of Ken Frazier all along when he only wanted the 50th percentile in pay and quality of reps. Well Ken, this is what you have now an average company with average reps.

Ken also left in place incompetent micromanaging directors like Thomas L. Lyon III who think the best way to get more sales is to have reps spend hours upon hours, including personal time after 5 pm and on weekends, creating highly descriptive business plans on every targeted account that does nothing to help reps sell more doses but gives Thomas information to go suck up to his bosses, Jan and Colleen.

DCO's like Thomas L. Lyon III also waste reps' valuable time by going on constant rep field visits year round where he is under the delusion that what happens is a normal day but in reality reps are spending WEEKS preparing for a scripted milk run where the customers already know Thomas and the reps are coming. Does this help bring in more sales? No. It annoys customers, wastes more time of the reps but it gives Thomas more information to suck up to Colleen and Jan. It also wastes Merck's money allowing management like Thomas L. Lyon to travel all over his region staying in hotels and consuming lots of food.

If management wants to be more hands on in the field, then give DCO's and CTL's their own set of accounts to call on too. Otherwise, these tactics that the likes of Thomas L. Lyon III use are time wasters and don't allow reps to make the best use of their time which is to improve immunization rates. If Merck is serious about growing the business, then let the reps sell without being pawns to Merck management's desperate attempt to show they have value to their bosses. They can show they have value by being accountable to their own accounts and ensuring the reps are compliant.

Constantly monitoring reps, forcing reps to make plans that really only benefit management and holding them hostage in constant meetings/teleconferences takes away from sales. By the way other companies including, GSK, have management calling on accounts too. Wake up Ken and senior leadership!!!!!

Getting rid of Thomas L. Lyon III would be one of the best changes ever at this point. He is the biggest waster of time, money, resources and putting under qualified people in vaccine positions.

Get rid of Phil Lowery too when you throw out the trash.

Hope so, VKCLs and CTLs need to be down sized... They are ineffective here in he "south"...

Remember, CTL's and DCO's don't do anything but collect all of the successes that the reps send in via emails and tell their bosses how well they are managing and motivating their teams. This has been going on for years. They do not like to hear anything negative because that would mean they aren't leading their teams to the promised land. Your managers are only as good as your emails. So spend more time writing your emails and collect your rewards.
