It goes back to that posters comment about how the lack of experience and seasoning really hurt. Too trusting of what his underlings were doing, and not realizing some were simply building their resumes up at NVD, in hopes of being put on the path to an executive suite position in 5-8 years at another company. If you know them, they all openly talk about this as their long-term career plans and have always seen this place as the golden goose to rocket up the ladder real fast.

This want for just a short period and it wasn't just in one org. What did he do after all twit and more happened in Commerrcail? He brought all them and more with him to Development. This my be caused by a lack of experience but it to the level of demonstrated managerial incompetence and cost NVS stockholders billion$ and JJ is letting him try again?

He is a great model for a leader in the post modern world business model as practiced by JJ and exemplified by Romney. It is NOT creating value that matters but making deals and looking good doing it. It is obvious that either he, his buddies at McKinsey or a combination of both, came up and helped negotiate the face-saving deal to "sell" Vaccines to GSK. The "sale" was actually part of the swap where GSK sold their oncology business to Novartis for $1.5 B dollars more than typical value models suggested while GSK, in return, paid Novartis $1.5B for the largest and least troublesome portion of Vaccines. The only way that Novartis could figure out how to unload the turd that VN himself helped create, to anyone. This stinker had literally been flogged to anyone that they could get to listen to the deal and and received laughs in return.

And even with this deal Novartis lost billions and the only thing that they got was to be able to claim that they finally sold most of it.

VN can claim no other value add to Novartis during his entire tenure.

It is obvious that much of what is related in this post is antidotal so what is factual and what isn't is in doubt. But, if even some of it is true this is a summary:

Novartis is going through a crisis caused by a lack of new drugs. It is reacting to this by recommitting to NIBR ("Doubling Down" as they say) and severely restructuring Development. Then placing as the Head of Development, someone who has no scientific back ground, never practiced medicine and has dubious history of running a commercial and development organizations at what is easily arguable, the biggest business flop in the history of Novartis.

How can this be a positive narrative for the future Novartis?

I think an allusion to a Monty Python movie is in order here!

Where ever he was in a leadership role it was like a Monty Python movie.

You missed the pandemic year when they made 1.9 billion dollars but the math is still relevant

PS...he was both the head of RNA and DEV. does he get credit for 40%

Hum, in most of the world that was considered a rip off of govt funds? It was wasn't it? If he gets credit for ripping off off govt $s does he also get credit for being part of the leadership when Novartis developed HS? Isn't that considered such a ripoff that no one else will pay a fucking cent to own it?

Here is a clue. Novaris just paid $1.5 B to take the non-flu part of the cost shot hole he built off thier hands and can't pay enough for anyone to take the part of the business that he used to ripoff the US govt for $1.9 for.

So yes, he is getting credit for that. obviously.

Just like his fellow conspirator, RF, is getting credit. Fellow scum bags.

If so, it looks like it pays well.

Right place right time? Does everyone in charge of any company that sold a treatment related to flu that season get credit? What about anti-virals? They have since even found to be a fraud.

But, let's assume that it was all legit. He just happens to be head of Vaccines when this happens and takes advantage of it to the same degree as all the other players int the flu market. The problem is that they are profitable every year and this was the only year that vaccines didn't lose 100s of millions of dollars. And He was one of the principles who lead the charge in all those years. And the results were, losing operations in all those years, and a company that will eventually be disposed of at billions of dollars of losses to Novartis stockholders.

These fact can't simply be forgotten.

Maybe he was made head of development - as part of the vaccines sell off deal

This is a stunning rebuke on Tim's old reports. Whilst I was not impressed by any of them, surely one of them could have been made acting until a proper person was found. Dr. Riva would have been the most qualified of the lot if you ask me.

Wasn't the new chairmen of the board the head of Vaccines back when this guy was first starting out? Maybe he remembers the promise and potential of those days and is not completely aware of actual results when put in a position of actual real decision making power? The Chairman was at Bayer during this guy's failures at Vaccines. I've heard that get tossed around as an explanation. Anyone high up at Vaccines at any point in their career have been able to convince themselves that the reason why the division had, is and will continue to loose money is because vaccines overall have become commoditized. Its not true, but if you take the Chairman's absence during the severe failures and the self-preservation readiness to blame it on external commoditization, then you get a logical explanation of what might be at play here.

Novartis remains a strange company... where else you can get promoted to a division head without prior substantial industry experience. The secret is, ...probably it is no secret, you need to have your godfather chairing the exec board. Unfortunately, the experiment failed.

He just got promoted to a Global Head with no qualifications and the only experience that he had was at a failed division.

When he was anointed the Head of Vaccines Development the first thing that happened was all the serious scientists and Development professionals headed for the exit.

It also indicates the strategic vision for the future of Novartis Development. He has no competencies in Development and is totally a tool of JJ. Someone who will, without any knowledge of Development, simply implement restructuring.

It just keeps get tin' better 'n better. But it won't matter as that's who it went for him in Vaccines and he is still where he is at today.
