First off Fayetteville and Asheville are on completely opposite sides of the state, so your question is weird. Not staying anywhere in between? You cover a whole state? Fayetteville:there is nowhere to go except tattoo parlors, strip joints, and massage parlors near the military base so enjoy. No nice hotels either. Asheville is in the mountains. Plenty of nice restaurants and live music. Stay at Crowne Plaza resort or Renaissance in downtown. If you have no budget constraints stay at the pricey Inn at Biltmore or Grove Park Inn.

Holiday Inn Conference Center is about the only decent place to stay in Fayettville. Near the hospital.

Asheville rocks. Go to the admiral for dinner. Check out orange peel for music. Lots of other great places....google Asheville and you'll see for yourself. Also, spa at grove park inn worth going to, rats are good in January mid week. Tons of great hikes, eats, music, art, you will love it!

I'm from Fayetteville (I know right... bless my heart) While I agree the hotel front is less than lovely, there are some great little spots there that fly under the radar! If you love pho grab some from the Saigon Bistro. This place is on an awful road and has no ambiance, but if you love take out and movies in your hotel room its delicious. Luigi's is awesome italian, Sherefe is amazing mediterranean, Latitude 35 has live music when the weather is nice and is a great little bar. Circa 1800 is yummy too!
