Hello. I am a former Abbott employee with almost 18 years of service. I was terminated in 2012 for performance reasons. I was having marital problems as well as dealing with an adolescent son who was acting out to my marital problems. I am considering writing a rehire letter to obtain a position that they are currently hiring for. I have the past experience and my performance wasn't an issue until about a year before termination. What are my chances of getting a position and who do I address the letter to?

Hmmmm.... That's a tough one to answer, with just the info you have given. As a general rule, we don't like to hire back people who have left, or been fired (as long as its not for something serious, like stealing, lying, falsifying documents, etc), for one key reason: you have now been "tainted" by exposure to how other company's do things, and as a result of that exposure, may be resistant to how we do things.

In other words, you may have experienced freedom from micro management and the "unique" Abbott management "style" that lead to your being terminated. It's hard to put the yoke back on.

On the other hand, you made it 18 years here, so you may have been so "Abbott-tised" that you cannot function without the whip, and may be unable to make even simple decisions on your own. You may be floundering on the outside, like a convict who has been in jail for 50 years and gets released as an old man. Many committee suicide; in a way, looking to do the same by coming "back inside".

If that's the case, I feel for you.

So I would recommend writing your letter. Be humble, apologetic, and stress you have learned the errors of your ways. You've been re-born, and see the light now. Highlight how subservient you were during the majority of your 18 years here. I would say dignified groveling, or begging with class, if you can manage it.

Can you reach out to your old DM and RM? Maybe meet them for lunch? If you can get their genuine endorsement it would go a long way.

    Good luck!

Absolutely awesome and spot on! It's so freeing not working for Abbott anymore. I had a little trouble adjusting to not being micromanaged. I think my new manager thought I was crazy. Haha

you want to go back to Abbott!?!? Every place I have ever worked has been better. Maybe your life will look better if you see things from a non Abbott perspective and work elsewhere. You may even find you can enjoy going to work.

Oh my gosh, "Every place I have ever worked"! How many places have you worked? Is there a reason for your job hopping? Maybe you're just a born nonconformist...

Very true. ABT is like working for the government: only some people have the temperament for it. Government workers typically can't make it or are unhappy in the private sector for the same reason.
