Not true. The younger person will have the larger lump because he/she ( with respect to acturarial tables ) will live longer. Therefore, larger NPV.

I retired after many years with another large pharma company. One of the biggest expenses is healthcare if one does not have the coverage. Luckily, most large pharma companies at age 55 give medical if the employee had at least 10 yrs. of service for a nominal fee.

There were different formulas used with respect to whether the person offered the lump sum was legacy Pharmacia, PD, WL ect. There were different pension formulations that were part of the merger deals, undoubtedly to help the fat cats at the top but ended up trickling down to us peons in this case. Not surprisingly, legacy pfizer reps were lowballed but some people who were legacy Pharmacia got a windfall. Sucks.

These pharma companies always do what is best for themselves. The reps and managers kill themselves for the company, use their own time for nonsense, etc. and in the end it all does not matter one bit.

Retired a year ago from another pharma at age 58. I worked 32 years and my options were 6,200 per month or 1,200,000 as a lump sum. Took the lump sum and rolled it over into an IRA account to withdraw as needed.

With Pfizer, who knows? Doubt it, we drained the bank on that sweet deal.
