I have been an Ortho rep since college and have an offer from a software company. Inside sales, but fast growth and stock options.

I'm sure the money is good and work life balance is good, but sitting at a desk with a headset selling software sounds really boring.

I think we all like being in the OR and working with doc's. It's hard work but very fun. Does anyone have experience in software sales? IT is booming but money isn't everything.

    Thank you

I'll be honest with ya. I've been in Ortho for 15 years. My peers over 20-25 years. 6% commission is absolutely horrible for what you do. I have even heard of mix of 3% commission.
Ortho is DEAD!!!!!!! Many many many more medical sales careers out there that make a hell of a lot more money without the OR being involved.
Don't worry about that non compete either.
If you were a good to average medical sales person the idea of setting at a desk with head phones on should mortifying you.

Setting at a desk? I can see why you had such a career in medical with that grammar. I got out of ortho for a year, to do cap equip. Missed being in the OR. That is one of the only fun parts of ortho sales. I guess I could go sell sutures. Those are so interesting!

Loose interpretation: I missed hanging out all day doing nothing except opening boxes. Had to work a little harder. That wasn't for me.

Where is this mythical "box opener" job you refer to ad nauseum? I've been at this gig for 23 years and my days are much like my peers, 12-15 hours a day planning cases, selling, surgery prepping, case coverage, trying to fill the epic backorders right now, x-ray templating et al. Were YOU just the lazy one? And does this not explain why you are no longer in this business?

amen to that. Box openers...heard that before. If it was so easy, how come there is so much turnover from newbies? Old guard stays while newbies come and go. Gen X can't handle work load and dedication...just ask all the service reps that I had to get rid of because waking up before 8 is too much for their entitled world.

I hate hearing the box openers too. I no longer do it, but being a ortho rep is not an easy gig. The stress alone from the numerous things that can go wrong along with close to zero flexibilty of you not being there for a case makes it a very demanding job.

If myself or a loved one was having a surgery, I would want an experienced rep covering the case. The surgeon is by far the most important but a good rep can avoid a ton of issues.

can all u chest thumping monkeys shut up and answer the question? No one cares about how hard you work(ed). The poster isnt asking about what your daily job duties are. Everyone knows what an Ortho rep does. Just answer the question Donald.
