As someone who spent most of their "career" in pharmaceutical sales, the thing that
blew me away the most when I left the industry, was at the hours of hard work people put
into real jobs in other industries…

You forget when you are in pharma, that it is truly a parallel universe so to speak, that
marches to the beat of its own drum, and doesn't follow many of the rules of normal businesses.

Looking back on it all, it is remarkable that Merck paid me 6 figures all those years to barely work part time…(And for all the haters out there - that part time work almost always had me as a top rep, either meeting or exceeding plan.)

People out there work really hard…The pharma industry is a nice place to be coddled, if you are not micromanaged by a crazy CTL, or pushed out as an older, vulnerable rep.

If you do go to another job in another industry, be prepared to work much, much harder than you did in pharma if you want to keep your job.

I like how all these part timers come on here talking about how little they worked then in the next sentance brag that they still think they were a " top rep always exceeded plan." Sure you were buddy. Shows you what a farce the " the plan" is and how little impact you really have. What kind of job is it that no one notices but you are a " top rep" when you barely show up? Sure buddy. What ever makes you feel good.

Good rep , bad rep..just doing my job rep...this is an incredibly easy job...
As for calling it a sales job...
No cold calling, prospecting or market analysis required (ok you do have to be able to read a spread sheet showing who you're top docs are)
No Training expenses (ask how much a simple insurance license costs or that real estate school costs)
No Price negotiating (gee doc were on most of the major plans)
No responsibility for delivery/production (when's the last time you got call late at night from Walgreen's saying their out of stock and can't get more in?)
No out of pocket expenses...try buying that bag of bagels and not expense it (save the receipt for tax time though!) see how that feels..
No marketing expense (taken care of..ever watch network news and all those drug ads?)...ask that hot shot realtor how much they spend on mailings, internet marketing etc..
No overhead (ok they charge some for the car..sorry I mentioned it)
No customer service / accounting issues - don't compare 'the insurance company copay won't...'
were talking about having to call up somebody and asking for MONEY or client calling you and asking for their MONEY back.
No client / prospect credit issue..Gee doc, our credit dept. won't let us let you Rx our product...haven't heard that yet.
No deadline (ok you got your biz plan homework due in a week)..
No "if the company don't get paid , you don't get paid'
No Draw (if you've got to ask or have to google it you are really not in sales)

Great job if your good , bad or somewhere in the middle, have fun with it and enjoy the time it allows you.

    You are an idiot.

Desk jobs do much less work than we do.

    State workers do less.

    Fed workers do less.

Cops, teachers, firemen all do less.

You just suck at what you do.

First, what you do wouldn't qualify as "work" by anyone's standards. Next, no one sucks at the rep job. You deliver boxes, collect signatures, pay for food, drive around aimlessly and lie about actually having sales discussions every day. It's hard for anyone to suck at something so ridiculous.

    You've got it wrong...

The one's who work the hardest and get the work done get canned!

Hands down, its the Starbuck deliverers and jokers who get spared.....
When cuts roll out having a bud up high helps you to stay...
    Its a CYA culture...

Yes-sir-eeeeee the workhorses and mules go overboard!

you are preaching to the choir cochise!! Of course the whole thing is a farce…that is the whole point of the post…that you can make 100 k a year doing pharma sales, but in the real world, you will work so much harder, probably for a lot less…

It doesn't make me feel "good" as you say, or bad…It is just a reflection back on the many years I spent in an industry, that I was too naive at the time to really understand…the whole thing is a total scam…

You need to go back to decaf in the morning by the way...

You're in the wrong real world. Sounds like you didnt get out of pharma. Or pharma was your pinnacle and now you're on the down slide. Working harder but making less? You're doing wrong. Doesn't sound like you're doing it at all.

    Hey Richard Head!

Good reps move market share because they work hard and can communicate effectively with the providers in their area.

You are just a Richard Head that can't do that, so you have to troll here.

Here is my advice to you Richard Head, F OFF!

"good reps move market share...blah, blah" that made milk shoot out of my nose..see what your market share does when insurance no longer covers your product or it goes tier 3....

    So true!

Then your manager will call you a crappy rep!

Go from top to bottom in lightening speed...next. slotted to go out the door...

....and your former pals and co-workers begin turning their noses up at you...

So so it goes in the pharma career...

This is the SHAM of sales performance ratings...we all know it. The rep has little control on results once insurance coverage is lost...

    Sales today....a big insurance game.
