Been in the industry for almost 15 years. Been a rep and a DM. I have to say, that we have not evolved as a business in the past 15 years at all. it is a complete regression actually. Expecting me to ride with my reps every 2-3 weeks is ridiculous and not a benefit to anyone. The fact that we have TBOs tells you how much this industry is about activity rather than performance. can't get rid of the bad ones in this type of bonus structure. make it 100% based upon sales and if you don't make your numbers for 2 years you are out...end of story! so many people hanging on until 2017...everyone has the same story---will look for other jobs after 2017. no you won't and why should you. there is no accountability here!

Everyone outside of PFE knows about the activity focus and it's poisoning us. I'm a DBM as well and our model is based upon 1990 reality. There is no other business in the world that has a manger ride with a rep for two 8 hour days every 4th week just to write up a FCG that no one looks at. Kinda like our IDP that no one ever gives a second thought. We are stuck in our own world of activity and we pay the wrong people. I can't get rid of the slackers and unfortunately a sub-culture of activity pros has developed who know how to play every game in the book from short term medical leaves to implicit bias charges to outright insubordination and HR is always on their side.

    We are screwed.

the ONLY organizations that this structure is OK is pharma. Med devices, insurance, finance, etc it is eat what you kill. our internal impression of what our sales team does is so far beyond what they actually do.

I was inside for 5 years numb nuts. This culture started inside and was forced outside. It still exists inside and it has been forced throughout the company.

I was on a brand marketing team and we have our own soft measures. We essentially managed vendors. We did none of the work ourselves. Terrible.

I was inside when we let the emasculated European males and hyphenated last name women take over and the next thing we did was do away with offices and go the this silly work station so that no one had their feelings hurt by having a smaller office than someone else. Terrible.

I left and went to the market access team and that was the worst I've ever been associated with. We were encouraged not to work. Instead we created lots of internal documents that said nothing but gave the appearance of work. When we saw market share increases, we took credit and blamed the sales team for not driving even more sales. When we couldn't gain favorable access, we blamed the sales team for not providing enough demand to support our rebate strategy. Terrible place.

Now I am on the sales team. The hunters are no longer here. The remainder is a group who specializes in activity. They know how to hit reach and frequency numbers. They know how to dial into ever single teleconference and webcast. The are experts and doing speaker programs filled with nurses and ready to retire customers. Terrible.

We are dead from within and it stinks.

Outside of the real estate investment posts, this is the best and most accurate post I've read all year on this site. Whoever you are, you've hit the nail on the head for both HQ drones (where I am now) AND the field monkeys (where I came from).

If some grad student doesn't use the rise and fall of Pfizer as a case study at Stern and Columbia Business Schools, then shame on them.

I love the case study comments that always come up. Pfizer is one of the most profitable companies in the world...look at their income statements. Would be way more profitable if 5 people weren't doing the same job and their skill set wasn't so niched.

Yep, everyone should quit complaining because Pfizer is very profitable plus we buy back $15 billion of stock every year and have $40 billion cash in the bank. It's a money machine so let's all do our Republican thing and ignore everything except all that lovely money pouring into our pockets......

once worked at PFE and have since moved on to better...not bigger though.
the best you can possibly do is complain at PFE as no change of magnitude will make it better for you. as a former employee, looking back it is absolutely shameful how little is expected out of so many people from a productivity standpoint at HQ.

If you even know what the acip updates are, you would know they do not include pediatrics. Please know what you're talking about before pretending you do.
