It's an obsolete job in a dying profession. Their job is almost entirely automated. They don't reall hire or fire anymore. Expense report is automated. They are clueless about geography business dynamics and have poor product knowledge. I had multi million dollar institutional accounts. Never did a manager ask to go in one with me. I spent tens of thousands of dollars on speaker programs. Never did a manager ever attend. They have been relegated to coaching. Most are ill suited, ill trained and inept at it. To most managers " coaching" becomes a euphemism for " bullying." You would think that the people in these positions would take it upon themselves to actually demonstrating some value by assuming some key account responsibility or taking the lead on advanced training or take on a special project or something. But they are lazy and stupid. Most just show up late to dot the i's on some forms they printed out that morning, ask " where's lunch"?, critizize activities they themselves know little about and were lousy at when they were in it, go home early, schedule a teleconference and use their " office day" to mow their lawn. The " position" such as it is, should be elminated. At best it's useless, at worst demoralizing and counter productive. Some engage in the worst nepotism, favoritism and probably labor illegality. Eliminate managers

Well stated. My manager did nothing for me. He'd book two days each month. Half of which he'd cancel at the last minute. On the first day he'd arrive between 12 - 2. He'd sit in on maybe one call and either drive back home or stay at the most expensive hotel. If he stayed he'd booze it up and tell me that if anyone asked he took my wife and I out. One day two, if there every was a second day, he'd leave by 11:00 and that's after breakfast and lunch on the company. The FCRs were completely false as he rarely witnessed anything. This guy used to bring his family up while driving through town and book hotels and dinners on the company claiming they were field rides. This guy awarded the team impact award to his buddies. We knew this because the rest of the team would talk about who they actually voted for. He'd also give these same people performance points for doing nothing. I never said anything because he was harmless to me but this guy is a true waste of space and is a major contributor to the watering down of Amgen.

Uh are managers needed? Just take a long look at Freeman and that is proof that they are useless and stupid.

I agree with the premise that managers are not needed, but heck my manager can ride with me as little as she/he wants to. Every day that goes by without a manager in my car is a blessed day. It is a side show of lies & fake calls. Let's ask a busy doctor some bull crap high impact question about why he doesn't use my drug first line for every patient while standing in a busy hallway. I can't imagine why doctors don't see us anymore.... maybe it's because we waste their time asking stupid questions. Maybe if we respected their time more, they would see us more. But, if we are talking a useless position, the Regional Manager job is even worse. They think coming to our accounts and sporting their big egos helps us in the field. My customers who will see them, just laugh at their self importance and some of my customers won't even help me out and see them if they ride with me. In all my years at Amgen, I have never had a manager at any level do anything to help move my numbers in the field. With that said, it's still a pretty sweet job.

It is uncomfortable to be with a manager because every other day when they are not with you, you are really bad at what you do. You don't like having someone watch you suck all day. It is no fun for you to close for the business with your manager because you never close. It is just not natural. But that is ok. You don't deserve to close. Because you are not really good at your job.

Maybe your manager is with you for 2 hrs because that is about as long as they can tolerate stupidity. 2 hrs is even probably hard to stomach. It is tough to watch people be so incompetent and then act as if the world owes them something.

What do the managers do? Really? They bring nothing to the table except making the rep get off their schedule to pick them up and take them back to car. It is a total waste of time.

I heard she was a micromanager and after working with her for almost a year and a half, I agree. Bottom line she wants you to work for her 24/7 and make her look good but she has no clue how to lead a team.

Oh Wendy, please get over yourself. And get off this site. You sucked as a leader and everyone knew it. Too bad you didn't realize your previous team hated you and thought you worst the worst district manager in Amgen.
