My resume...gonna apply

    Hi guys, I'm applying to a couple Publicis jobs in TX and want some feedback. I want to leave a job off my resume. I've been in Pharma 10 yrs. 6 with Merck and hopping around about once a year since as the industry has been shaky. I want to leave off a 6 month stint at Otsuka. Will that show up in a back ground check if I don't list it? It was just too many jobs to put for the past 4 yrs. please weigh in! Peace

    If you got fired (downsized is not fired), then leave it off the Otsuka. 1 year off is nothing, so don't worry about leaving a year off. You can just say you are picky and looking for a perfect fit, and you have been spending your time looking for a job. You should put some volunteer work on your resume or some other continuing education in there, if possible.

    If you didn't get fired, then leave it on.

    This industry blows anyway, so they can't be too picky. People are getting let go left and right despite being great sales people. I have noticed the idiots seem to get promoted still, and the AHOLES always can BS their way into getting the job, and after a few months, the managers that have hired them know they made a mistake.

    Just find out what that work verifier site lots of companies now use (www.theworknumber.com) pulls up. IDK if Otsuka participates but I know some Pharma companies use that service for employment verification. My friend is a manager and she left a 7 month position off her resume.

    They have been known to give a bad reference, so be careful. They'll say that they only give out employment dates, but theyve gotten a bit shady on that.

    So, now that I confirmed that "a car travels on a road" I can respond. If you leave something off your resume because you think you had too many jobs in a short time you are risking the reference checker finding that out. I think there's some jobs database that some HR departments outsource to. You do not want to blow any job after you have landed it. On the other hand, you may not land it if you look like a job hopper. I don't know anyone who has left a job off. I can ask around as now I am curious.

    Yes they can and they have. If they call the main line and don't get the right HR person on the phone, i.e. extension change, or person no longer handles references. They'll call back and ask around until they can get someone to talk to them. A favorite that shrewd HR reference "checkers" can use is to ask to speak to someone in sales or telemarketing to throw of the scent of a background check. You'd be amazed at the tactics people use and how much a receptionist or PBX operator can be easily tricked or manipulated. Yes. It can happen and it's not that easy to sue unless you are able to find someone tricky enough to do the same and record the phone conversation. Some of these guys are pretty slick.

    As long as you request dates because new employers want to see consistent employment. You need proof of employment. Ask for work performance references from managers and coworkers.

    Here's my two cents; when a company does a background check do they call a company and ask (1) "did John Doe work there from May to August 2012?" Or do they ask (2) "hello, when did John Doe work there?" If if its the first hopefully the person who answers at the former employer doesn't fact check and just says yep, sounds correct. Best of luck to ya. We all indulge, omit, etc

    Do not leave any position off a resume. If you pulled a paycheck, that will show up on a background check.

    Employers can only verify dates of employment

    If you were truly downsized and have a good reference from said company, list on your references. Shows you are not hiding.

    So many acquisitions and downsizing in the industry, not unusual to see on resumes. Sometimes a name change with one company appears like multiple jobs, when in fact you were in same position, but the company was bought out.

    Bottom line is that they don't have as much information as you think…they can only verify what you have on your resume.

    Just answer their questions and don't give them more.

    Also, there is NO WAY they can give out a bad reference. They will open themselves up to lawsuits, and that information is too subjective. If you have a reference you give them, that should be enough.

    OP, don't listen to the negative losers on here, that are dummies and want to instill fear. Most of them suck at sales anyway. And, they certainly suck at life.

    know what that means.
    Have you considered not whoring around on your spouse at work (or maybe on your personal time)?? Maybe then, you'd be taken more seriously in life and at work. LOL ;)
