Double dip

I feel forced to double dip. With all the downsizing its the only way to protect your income and sleep at night. I have had 9 jobs due to downsizing in 6 years. It is horrible. If it weren't for double dipping, I would lose my home and wouldn't be able to support my family. Not trying to be money hungry, just so sick of having zero income due to downsizing. I have never gotten a severance. They come up with a reason to fire you, so that they don't have to pay it. Double dipping is just insurance. So much less stressful, when you get the phone call. "sorry, but your position has been eliminated". Sad thing, is you have to be friendly to your teammates and act sad you lost your job. You can't admit you still have a job due to double dipping. Always afraid both companies will find out and get fired from both. Only been caught once by one company so far. Worth the gamble.

I'm curious how you manage the second company car. Do you spend time each day driving around just to put miles on both vehicles?
Also, are manager ride alongs stressful since you might slip and say the wrong thing?

    Other dipper here:
I only have 1 company car now. This works out great since I use our company car as a personal car for my other pharma job. I make money off gas receipts, from my other pharma job, since they buy my gas also. But years ago I had 2 company cars. I allowed a close friend to drive it, and charged him $50. per month. Of course, I made sure I put in the gas. He never had to worry about anything, so it was worth it for him to drive one of my company cars every day. This adds miles nicely!
No problem with mgr. ride alongs. I'm not concerned about saying the wrong thing, and I focus on the job at hand. It's been over 5 years now, and I've managed to keep both jobs!

Can you say how you got caught the one time? Or what company it was with? Just curious, I'm trying to cover all my bases. Thanks

Curious on your income tax at the end of the year...how does that work? Do you get to write off more expenses?

    Dipper here:
I really try not to write off more expenses. I try and keep it within range. And I have always believed that a CPA's signature on your 1040 Form, etc., means less chance for you to be audited. But of course, both W-2's must be submitted to show your entire income for the year.
You can write off a particularly large expense or two, if you have them, for the other job as well. Just don't try to write off something like "2 home offices".

Doesn't have to be two pharma jobs. I am working in dental sales and pharma at the same time. In dental you are on your own, no ride alongs unless you choose (we call them co-travels on this side), use your own car, etc. If you want your manager to co-travel they do it to get business and help you close sales, not to check up on you and justify their job. Also, you have mfg reps who call on you and they buy you lunch or will take you to dinner because, like us in pharma, they want you to push their product to the end user.

I make my pharma calls in the morning, some in the afternoon, I space them out. In between I see dental customers and this way there is no crossover, etc. No doctors accidentally slipping, when i go see them with my pharma manger since I'm not in the same offices with both managers., etc.

The best part is that I drive a free Watson vehicle and the dental company pays me a car allowance for it, crazy! In addition the dental also pays a small salary for now and expenses. Eventually I will be a 1099 employee and it won't matter. I submit expenses for both companies on the same thing like parking and small things.

This is THE BEST thing ever!

I don't really get what the worry is about getting a 2nd job and the new company doing a job verification with your current one? Who cares? If I go interview and get offered a new job well I have a current job so obviously the verification is going to show me as currently employed as I haven't quit yet.

Yes. And if done correctly, you would only lose ONE of your jobs if you ever got caught. It's safe.

    THIS IS AWESOME!

Finally someone with some brains, and more importantly, some balls out there. Too many spineless muppets preaching about how hard they work and groveling about how they are mistreated by management.

There is no such thing as "double dipping".

Many of my family members only have a high school education at most and work multiple jobs. Why would someone with a college degree work less than someone with a GED?

Do what you have to do to survive. Never let co-workers tell you right from wrong. Most educated employees are spineless puppets that will do almost anything except the smart thing in regards to keeping a job.
