Ella - Anyone else think it is or could cause an abortion?

I am trying to really think about promoting or not promoting this product they say will be in our portfolio's now. I mean if Ella causes an abortion - or the day after pill that you can take up to 5 days after intercourse, what if - conception does occur in the first 24-48 hours and the medication destroys or aborts that fetus?

I understand the concept of delaying....but what if there was no delay and intercourse occurred at the exact timing to create a fertilized egg? Then what happens if a patient takes Ella?

Does anyone else have concerns like this or is it just me?

If so how can a company force you to do something against your religious beliefs?

What are your thoughts on this? Am I making something out of nothing? Please state your beliefs on right to life when you comment regarding this post.

I will try to avoid the legal/ethical/political questions you ask. Where you stand is dependent on your definition of pregnancy, assuming that your definition of abortion is the stopping of pregnancy.

For background, Ella and other emergency contraceptives work primarily by delaying ovulation. The secondary mechanism could include prevention of implantation (i.e. changing the uterine lining). Ella has no effect on an egg that has implanted in the uterus. So if implantation occurs, Ella will not prevent that pregnancy.

So here are the two schools of thought.

From a scientific/clinical perspective (including ACOG) pregnancy occurs once a fertilized egg has implanted to the uterus. Basically a woman is not pregnant at fertilization, but at implantation. So in this definition Ella or other forms of emergency contraception are not abortifacients since they have no effect on an implanted egg. That's why medically the products are classified as emergency contraception.

Others consider pregnancy as occurring once the sperm fertilizes the egg. So in this definition a woman is pregnant as soon as fertilization occurs. In this definition of pregnancy, some may consider Ella an abortifacient because there is a chance that Ella will prevent that egg from implanting.

I will leave it to you and others to answer the religious/legal questions.

Your answer is clear. My religious beliefs make me believe that at conception everything is there for that growing fetus and YES it is a child at that point. So the fact that the egg and sperm have met and that would be aborted then YES Ella causes abortions. Thanks for clarifying.

IT'S CLEARLY ABORTION........VERY SAD>>> THAT A COMPANY WOULD TELL A REP TO PROMOTE SOMETHING AGAINST THEIR RELIGIOUS BELIEFS. NOW THIS IS A REAL DILEMMA.

I agree with the poster. I am looking for a new position starting today and planning to leave Watson. I cannot work for a company that has their representatives promoting abortions. I like the company, the people I work with....but I cannot let my feelings stand in line and question my moral beliefs. I just can't believe they are even considering doing this.

I totally agree! I have two of my top Docs tell me they would NOT write for this drug. They are very religious Physicians and I feel the same way about this drug. I will be leaving Watson as well.

    WOW
An intelligent and respectful post on CP.

By the Christian definition, it is a child when sperm meets egg. So, my question to you guys is, why are you "looking for work" instead of quitting.
Personally, I have always gone with the medical definition of implantation. Many fertilized eggs never make it to implantation. That is when a pregnancy occurs. I ABSOLUTELY respect a different opinion, however I don't understand staying if it goes against your core beliefs.

corruption: being deteriorated from the standard or normal, morally unsound or debased; perverted; evil; depraved; decay; putridity; rottonness. Just as Washington D.C. is the penis of the U.S.A., only concerned about self-gratification with no conscience, so Watson Brand management is to the healthcare industry in general. A fairly accurate metaphor, n'est-ce pas?

Oh, but lets watch conservative ideology slide down the pathway to oblivion in the coming years! C'est fantastique!

Been there, done that; the last WH conservative was in 1988. The only cogent relation to oblivion is your (lack of) intelligence. More importantly for you, ma petite perruche, should you develop breast or cervical cancer in your forties, that independent (death?) panel about which you are in denial will only provide you palliative care, since your age renders you too few useful years of service to (the State) "society" to justify the resources for an operation. Until then just enjoy your skipping through Lala land spouting that CNN-MSNBC pap you think is so cute. Perhaps your grandchildren will enjoy repaying your trillions debt as serfs to the state, wondering what you could have been thinking to vote the way you did because it felt good. Just admit to them you have the brains of a gnat. Si drole, c'est si bon!
